To help keep managers informed, notify them when volunteers take action on a shift or opportunity. You can enable email and bell notifications. You can also send shift notifications to an email address not associated with a Bloomerang Volunteer account.

Notification Methods
Bell notifications appear in Bloomerang Volunteer in the main navigation bar, and are available everywhere. Click the bell to view notifications.
Email notifications send from Bloomerang Volunteer to managers.
Notification Categories
You can turn on shift notifications, opportunity notifications, and custom notifications.
Shift Notifications
Send a notification to opportunity managers when volunteers take an action on a shift within that opportunity:
- Signup — Sign up for shifts
- Join Waitlist — Join the waitlist for shifts
- Confirm — Confirm that they plan to attend their upcoming shifts
- Decline — Decline attendance for their upcoming shifts
- Remove — Remove themselves from their scheduled shifts
Managers receive just one notification (bell, email, or both) each time a volunteer completes the shift signup workflow. For example, if a volunteer has multiple shifts in their cart, managers receive just one notification. The notification includes details for all shifts in the cart.
Shift and waitlist notifications are separate. If a volunteer has both sign-up shifts and waitlisted shifts in their cart, managers receive one notification for the sign-up shifts and one notification for the waitlisted shifts.
Opportunity Notifications
Send a notification to opportunity managers, organization managers, or both when volunteers:
- Sign Up — Sign up for the opportunity
- Remove — Remove themselves from the opportunity
Custom notifications do not apply to shift and waitlist signups.
Custom Notifications
Send an email to an email address not associated with a Bloomerang Volunteer account when volunteers take these actions:
- Sign Up — Sign up for the opportunity
- Remove — Remove themselves from the opportunity
Manage Shift and Opportunity Notifications
With Shift and Opportunity notifications, you can choose to send an email notification, a bell notification in Bloomerang Volunteer, or both when a volunteer takes action on the shift or opportunity.
To set up or change shift or opportunity notifications:
- Select My Opportunities.
- Click an opportunity.
- Click General Settings, Notifications & Permissions.

Note: Changes to notifications apply to the opportunity you’ve selected. Each opportunity has its own set of notifications.
Manage Custom Notifications
Notify an email address not associated with a Bloomerang Volunteer account when volunteers take specific actions.
For example, you can send an email to a distribution list that includes a group of employees like main-office-staff@example.org
or to an email address that is monitored but not tied to a specific person like info@example.org
.
You can set up custom email notifications when volunteers take the following actions:
- Sign Up — Sign up for the opportunity
- Remove — Remove themselves from the opportunity
To notify an email address not associated with a Bloomerang Volunteer manager account:
- Select My Opportunities.
- Click an opportunity.
- Click General Settings, Notifications & Permissions.
- Click Notification Settings.
- In the Custom Notification section, enter the email address to send notifications.
- Click Save.
- Turn on either or both notifications.
Note: You must enter and save an email address before you can turn on a custom notification.
