Manage Opportunity Language Settings

Bloomerang Volunteer is available in the following languages:

  • English
  • French
  • Dutch
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Italian

To switch between these languages, use the language dropdown. When you create a new opportunity, the opportunity’s language will be the one that you have currently selected.

Most of the text in Bloomerang Volunteer is automatically translated into each of these languages. However, text that your organization adds is not automatically translated. At the opportunity level, this includes:

  • The opportunity name
  • Signup button text
  • Location and venue information
  • Shift information

You can customize the text for these fields on the Language Settings page.

Volunteers can also select their preferred custom field language. If localized text has been added for a custom field in a volunteer’s preferred language, the custom field appears in that language. Otherwise, it appears in the opportunity’s primary language, the organization’s primary language or English by default.

Language settings can also be customized at the organization level.

Set Your Opportunity’s Primary Custom Field Language

You can set a language as the primary language for your opportunity’s custom fields. The opportunity’s primary language is used:

  • If a volunteer is not logged in.
  • If a volunteer’s preferred custom field language has not been added to the opportunity.
  • If text is not available for a custom field in the volunteer’s particular language.

To set a language as your opportunity’s primary language, click the star above the language’s name.

Edit Custom Field Text

After you add a language on the Language Settings page, you can add and modify text for each custom field in the language table shown here:

When you add a new custom field language to your opportunity, a column for that language is added to the language table. Click any text box in the table to begin editing. When you are finished, click Save Changes. To undo your changes, click Cancel All Changes. To delete the contents of all text boxes in a language column, hover your mouse over the column header and click X.

  • Press Shift+Enter to move vertically.

Custom Fields that Cannot be Edited on the Language Settings Page

Some custom fields can’t be edited on the opportunity Language Settings page:

  • Form questions and qualifications that are set up at the organization level. To edit the translated text for these, use the organization Language Settings.
  • The opportunity public page description. To add translated versions of the public page description, use the language selector dropdown to switch Bloomerang Volunteer to a different language, then edit the page description in the opportunity’s Recruitment settings.
  • The Opportunity Waiver. To add translated versions of the opportunity waiver, use the language options in the waiver form question.

Export Custom Field Text to a .CSV File

To export the contents of the language table to a comma-separated value (.CSV) file, click Export All Language Strings to .CSV.

Import Custom Field Text from a .CSV File

To import language strings into your opportunity from a .CSV file, click Import Language Strings From .CSV.

The .CSV file contains columns for all of the languages that Bloomerang supports, even if you have not added those languages on the Language Settings page. If you add text in the .CSV file for a language that has not been added to your opportunity, then import the .CSV file, Bloomerang automatically adds that language to your opportunity.

Note: When you open the .CSV file to edit it, open it with UTF-8 encoding to ensure that special characters display properly.
